Imagine listening to the endless flow of water cascading down 60 feet of moss covered rock face lined with ferns and rhododendren as the water flows beneath the deck on which you sit, as it continuing downward into a pond full of hungry Brown Trout. While doing this, hummingbirds zip from flower to flower while the sounds of the forest provide a symphony of natural music. This is such a place, yet at the same time, it is also an ideal bugout/secure homestead (but more on that later).
The deck on which you sit is part of a wrap around porch of a one bedroom log home with sleeping loft and one bath. Inside the two screened doors is a two story great room anchored by a natural stone wood burning fireplace, open staircase to the sleeping loft and oozing with charm. Warm in the winter and cool in the summer, this is a quintessential mountain log home that fits like a favorite flannel shirt. Step out on to the covered front porch and you’ll see a terraced set of stone steps leading to a timber bridge while taking in a 20+ mile view to distant mountains. Yes, this property has that rarest of rare settings: a waterfall AND a long distance mountain view in the same spot. Across one branch of the creek you’ll find a custom made ornamental gate leading to a foot bridge and trail beyond. Another trail with the simple sign “Overlook” leads you up the mountain to a sitting area perched on a cluster of rocks. Yet another trail leads below the trout pond to another gathering spot with chairs and hammock in the woods. How do I know it so well? My wife and I had the privilege of being guests of the owners for two nights, so we were able to explore it all.
Tucked away within 181 acres of private forest just 25 minutes north of Wilkesboro (just 90 minutes to Charlotte, yet worlds away), this is a true retreat property offering peace and quiet as well as security for those so minded. Behind an electronic gate at the public road, then another gate further in, this homestead offers privacy unlike any other. Entry by a very well maintained private gravel road, its accessible year round. But the log cabin is just one of several features on this property. Click here for a full length video of the property.
Within the 180 acres you’ll find nearly a mile of well built and maintained interior gravel surfaced roads connecting numerous points of interest. These roads are so well done that any kind of passenger vehicle can use them. Leaving the cabin, you wind your way through the woods, crossing a creek, then alongside a large boulder field to find an off-grid one bedroom/one bath farm cottage. Stepping inside is like walking into a homestead museum along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It hearkens back to an earlier time, with a large eat in kitchen with hinged windows that swing out to the long range mountain view. Stepping into the spacious living room you’ll find it anchored by a pot-belly wood stove. Upstairs via ladder is a private bedroom and the bath on the lower level has a picture window itself looking out at the view. This cabin is nestled beside its own creek. With the flip of a switch, the Honda generator springs to life and lights up the interior as needed.
Leaving this cabin, you course your way over the interior roads and decide to take the left fork or the right fork. Taking the right fork leads to a small cabin nestled in the woods beside the same creek, only lower in elevation. This cabin has rough, wide planked cedar siding and metal roof with a small pond out front. This cabin hasn’t been occupied in several years and today is basically a shell waiting for someone to bring it back to life. Imagine a small hunting cabin. Click here for an interactive map of the property.
Retracing ones’ route and taking the other fork leads to a wide wooded plateau with large circular stone lined driveway. This driveway wraps around a basement foundation already built featuring three single car garage bays and bathroom. This was a house that was started some years ago with the first floor framing built over the garage. The owner thoughtfully sealed the entire floor framing with a heavy rubber membrane, thus protecting the structure from the elements. Presently used for the storage of materials, this foundation is an ideal starting point for one’s home or storage of prepper supplies. Its easy to see the long range view as you stand on the first floor above the garage. There is even a three bedroom septic system and underground power installed at the site. Additionally, you’ll find two classic farm buildings off to the side that are good for small livestock or materials storage. A well maintained trail gently leads you downward to more trails and one that follows the large creek back upstream. But that’s not all.
Venture back up toward the main cabin and continue along another well maintained gravel road to the upper reaches of the property (300′ above the main cabin), and you’ll come to a sweeping cleared three acre setting with an outstanding long distance mountain and valley view. You can drive right onto this site because it has a graded driveway complete with concrete block wall and you will find a full concrete block basement foundation in place at this site. Its simply stunning. As before, this site also has a three bedroom septic system and power installed.
But this property doesn’t stop there, if you decide to explore more of the 181 acres, you’ll find miles of trails throughout, and we’re not talking about overgrown logging roads. We’re talking about well maintained trails the connect all the dots, many of which are wide enough to drive your SUV. Some of these follow creeks in the hollars with surprises such as a quaint storage shed out in the woods or a studio building up on a hillside. Others lead up along ridges and gentle plateaus of hardwoods and pines so flat that if you wanted to build on them, you could do so with a slab foundation, and yet still have a long range view. The sounds of water are all over this property due to the many creeks and springs.
Ideal for a large family or group of friends, this property can be the perfect family compound for recreation and creating memories. Or it could be an incredible prepper retreat. Privacy is outstanding. The water features are abundant and such that micro-hydroelectric is a good option for power generation. Or if you want solar, much of the property is south facing. There are small fields that could be used for orchards or gardening and gentle forest areas that could be made into pasture. Situated between 1,300′ to 1,800′ above sea level, it offers comfortable four season living with no extreme winters. Well off the beaten path yet just 25 minutes to the bustling small mountain towns of Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro. With two existing dwellings, a third that could be finished out and two foundations already in place, the infrastructure and improvements on this property represent an investment far exceeding the asking price. Then how do you value a 60′ private waterfall? No wonder the owners call this “Waterfall Hideaway”. They have successfully rented the main cabin as a VRBO for years. As it is a rental, most of the furnishings will transfer upon sale.
Yes, this property is both magical and enchanting. Its truly a one-of-a-kind and we don’t believe it will last very long on the market. It has simply too much to offer.
